(ST. LOUIS, Mo.) - The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team ended play Sunday, October 20 with two victories at the second University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin hosted by Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. The Tartans improve to 19-7, 4-3 after winning two 3-1 matches. The first victory came over #19 University of Chicago before topping University of Rochester in the nightcap.
The Tartans opened the day against the 19th-ranked Maroons. After dropping the first set 25-13, the Tartans rallied to win the next three, 25-23, 25-15 and 25-21 to pull off the upset. Junior Ali Celentano (Mission Viejo, Calif./JSerra Catholic) led the team with 14 kills while freshman Casey Salandra (Carol Stream, Ill./St. Francis) recorded 11. Freshman Jackie Gibbons (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) led the Cardinal and Gray by hitting .439 and tallied eight kills. It marked the second time in four matches the freshman led the team in hitting. Freshman setter Emily Newton (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Chadwick School) collected 30 assists.
Defensively, Carnegie Mellon totaled 12 block assists with Salandra leading the charge with four. The Tartans had three with double digit digs, as senior Ali Nichols (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) led with 17 digs. Celentano had 14 and freshman Molly Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) contributed 10.
In their second match, the Tartans won 25-22, 20-25, 25-17 and 25-19 over the University of Rochester. Celentano and senior Mary Stadelman (Washington, Pa./Trinity) led the offense with 15 and 12 kills, respectively, while Gibbons recorded another eight in the win. Newton tallied 37 assists and had four service aces, while Nichols finished with 21 digs. As a team, the Tartans had 12 service aces with Newton leading the way following three from Higgins. Celentano and senior Senna Parsa (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) each had two.
While recording seven kills in both matches, Parsa tallied her 1,000th career kill and now has 1,003 over the past four years.
The Tartans be back in action on Friday, October 25 against DeSales University at the Wid Guisler Invitational hosted by Juniata College.
