#25 Tartans Split a Pair with Ranked Opponents

(HUNTINGDON, Pa.) – The 25th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team competed at day two of the Juniata Asics Invitational and split a pair of matches. The Tartans fell 3-1 to No.2 Juniata College before knocking of their second top-10 team in two days, defeating No.9 Christopher Newport University 3-0. Carnegie Mellon is now 7-1 overall following its play in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania.

The Tartans opened play on Saturday with the host Eagles and lost in four games by the scores of 25-15, 23-25, 26-24, 25-18. Junior Heather Holton (Haslett, Mich./Haslett) led the Tartans with 14 kills while sophomore Lauren Mueller (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown SIEM Academy) ended with 10. Senior setter Emily Newton (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Chadwick School) ended with 31 assists.

Carnegie Mellon had two with double-digit digs with Mueller totaling 15 and senior Molly Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) recording 14.

In the Tartans straight set win (25-13, 32-30, 25-16) over Christopher Newport, Holton once agian was the Cardinal and Gray top attacker, as she put down nine kills. Mueller finished with eight while senior Jackie Gibbons (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) and junior Eliza Donohue (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) each had seven kills. Newton handed out 33 assists.

Defensively, Higgins totaled her third 20 dig contest on the season to lead the Tartans with 22. Mueller added 12.

The Tartans will entertain Franciscan on Wednesday, September 14 at 7:00 p.m.
