#12 Volleyball Splits a Pair at Ohio Northern Tournament

(ADA, Ohio) – Carnegie Mellon University's volleyball team, ranked 12th nationally, competed at the second day of the Ohio Northern University Tournament Saturday. The Tartans opened play with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-15) win over Defiance College before dropping a 3-1 (25-11, 25-21, 18-25, 25-20) contest to Thomas More College to close the tournament.

Seniors Lauren Mueller (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown SIEM Academy) and Sarah Jurgens (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) once again led the attack with 13 kills each. Junior Erika Foose (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) recorded eight kills in the win for the Tartans while hitting .727. Junior Maia So-Holloway (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) ended the match with 40 assists, marking just the second time in her career she has handed out 40 or more assists in a contest. So-Holloway also contributed three service aces while junior Kayla Yew (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) had four.

The Tartans recorded double digit in digs with Yew leading the way with 18. Mueller added 13 and So-Holloway had 11. At the net, junior Sahara Aqui (Miramar, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) totaled six blocks, five assist and one solo, and Jurgens recorded four block assists.

In the setback to Thomas More, a match that was delayed in the third set due to humidity on the court, Foose tabbed a career-best 11 kills and added four block assists. Jurgens led the Tartans with 12 kills while So-Holloway finished with 33 assists.

Yew led the way with 19 digs and Mueller collected 13. Sophomore Jordan Allen (Pearland, Texas/St. Thomas' Episcopal School) had four block assists.

Carnegie Mellon will open its home season on Wednesday, September 5 when the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson College travel to Pittsburgh. The match is set to start at 7:00 p.m.
