Tartans Claim Fourth Consecutive AVCA Team Academic Award

(LEXINGTON, Ky.) – The 2019 Carnegie Mellon University volleyball program has been recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for its performance in the classroom by being named a recipient of the AVCA Team Academic Award. This marks the Cardinal and Gray's fourth consecutive season earning the award.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. The Tartans finished the year with a team GPA of 3.81.

Under the direction of first-year head coach Anne Bock, Carnegie Mellon appeared in its fourth straight NCAA tournament and ended the season with a 22-8 record.

Contributing to the 3.81 GPA for the Tartans were nine student-athletes whom earned a 4.0 during the playing season while 10 accomplished the feat in the spring.

A record breaking total of 1,313 programs hailing from the three divisions of the NCAA, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, the National Junior College Athletic Association and high schools were represented on the All-Academic Team. There were 231 D-III teams who made their way on the list, also topping last year's record.
