The Carnegie Mellon football program celebrated its 500th victory on Friday, April 20, as more than 60 alums joined current and former staff members on campus at the Tartans Pavilion. Carnegie Mellon registered its 500th win with a 28-13 victory at the University of Chicago on November 5, 2011.

John Polles arrived on the Carnegie Tech campus in 1963 faced with an important decision – should he enroll in the institution’s physical education or ROTC requirement? Since Polles was going to play football and run track, the physical education route wasn’t particularly appealing, so he enrolled in the campus ROTC program. Four years later, he embarked on a distinguished 25-year career in the United States Army and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

The Carnegie Mellon University football program will join the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) as an affiliate member for the start of the 2014 season. The Tartans will maintain their three-game University Athletic Association (UAA) schedule with Case Western Reserve University, the University of Chicago and Washington University in St. Louis. Case Western will join Carnegie Mellon as an affiliate member of the PAC.

Junior cornerback Sam Thompson (Alcoa, Tenn.) and sophomore offensive guard Nathan Cheek (Lancaster, Ohio) of the Carnegie Mellon University football team were named to the D3football.com 2011 All-South Region team. Thompson was selected as a second team member while Cheek earned third team honors.

Senior defensive lineman Andrew Medenbach (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) and junior cornerback Sam Thompson (Alcoa, Tenn.) of the Carnegie Mellon University football team were named a Capital One Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Tuesday, December 6. Mendenbach and Thompson were both honored as second-team members.

As a kid playing high school football in Alcoa, Tennessee, Sam Thompson never imagined being among the national leaders in any statistical category on the college level. Thompson, who recently finished his junior season with the Carnegie Mellon football team, ended the campaign ranked second in Division III with seven interceptions. Not only have his accomplishments ranked him nationally for the year, Thompson’s name also appears in Carnegie Mellon’s records book, as he tied the single-season mark for interceptions.

Of the 20, six of them were honored as first-team members and 10 are making their first appearance on the team.

This marks the second time this season Garrett has received the honor.

The Carnegie Mellon University football team had six members named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Capital One Academic All-District Team Thursday, November 10. To be nominated for the award, a student-athlete must be a starter or significant reserve and maintain a GPA of 3.3 or better.

The Carnegie Mellon University football team traveled to the Windy City to play the Maroons of the University of Chicago Saturday, November 5. In the University Athletic Association (UAA) contest the Tartans defeated the Maroons 28-13. The win marks the 500th in the history of the program and moves the Tartans record to 5-4, 1-1 while the Maroons are now 5-4, 0-2.
