Tartans Sweep Seven Events to Defeat Clarion

(Pittsburgh, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team defeated Clarion University during Saturday morning's dual meet 174-119. The Tartans are now 2-0 on the season.

The Tartans performed well in the 1,000-yard freestyle having all top three finishers. Sophomore Steven Geier (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), sophomore Matthew Nielsen (Ashburn, Va. / Briar Woods), and freshman Dustin Ferzacca (Beverly, Mass./Manchester Essex) finished with times of 10:00.46, 10:08.53, and 10:25.41, respectively.

The men also swept the 200-yard freestyle. Junior Andrew Yee (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) came in first with a time of 1:45.61. Senior Eddie Sears (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River ) finished second in 1:47.53 while junior David Campbell (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) made it a close race finishing third in 1:48.41.

In the twelfth event of the day Carnegie Mellon swept the field again. Taking one, two, and three in the 200-yard butterfly, freshman Brian Walsh (Winnetka, Ill. / New Trier) (1:55.61), freshman Mark Smith (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hinsdale Central ) (2:00.44), and freshman Jay Jin (Canton, Mich./Canton) (2:02.74) easily took the top three spots.

The Tartans then took the field again in the 50-yard freestyle with freshman Sivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) finishing in 22.51, sophomore Lucas Bruder (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) in 22.52, and sophomore Carter Sharer (Oakton, Va./Oakton) close behind in 22.57.

The final three events which Carnegie Mellon swept on the day were the 100-yard freestyle, the 500-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly. Sears, freshman Evan Li (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista), and Geier took the top spots in the sprint freestyle in 47.91, 48.00 and 49.56. In the distance freestyle Walsh, Yee, and Smith finished in 4:47.27, 4:52.79 and 5:01.70. And in the 100-yard butterfly Mehta, Campbell and Sharer finished in 52.91, 52.97, and 54.61.

The Tartans will be competing next on November 9 at Grove City College.
