Distance Freestyle Events Open Competition at Kenyon's Total Performance Invitational

(GAMBIER, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming team traveled to Kenyon College for the annual Total Performance Invitational and began competition on Thursday, December 5 with two events. The Tartans swam against some of the country's best in University of Pennsylvania, Davidson College, Grove City College, DePauw University, Johns Hopkins University and Kenyon.

The first event for the evening on the men's side was the 1,650-yard freestyle. This meet marked the first time this season the Tartans have competed in this distance freestyle. Junior Andrew Yee (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) touched first for the Tartans and 22nd overall in a time of 16:27.76, while freshman Dustin Ferzacca (Beverly, Mass./Manchester Essex) was 23rd in 16:28.90.

The 800-yard freestyle relay team of freshman Brian Walsh (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier), freshman Evan Li (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista), sophomore Steven Geier (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) and senior Eddie Sears (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) swam to an 11th-place finish in 6:52.88. The time was the best for a team of Tartans in the 800-yard freestyle relay since the 2009-2010 season when a group of four swam 6:48.37 to set the school record and earn All-America Honorable Mention at the Division III Championships.

Carnegie Mellon's B team of sophomore Matthew Nielsen (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods), sophomore Philip Farr (Campbell, Calif./Bellarmine College), junior David Campbell (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) and sophomore Jay Jin (Canton, Mich./Canton) in the 800-yard freestyle relay finished 19th in 7:05.53.

The Tartans will continue competition at the meet on Friday, December 6 with preliminaries starting at 9:30 a.m. and finals set for 5:30 p.m.
