Tartans Tune-Up for UAA Championships at Western Pennsylvania Invitational

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – On Saturday, February 1 the Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team traveled to the University of Pittsburgh for the Western Pennsylvania Invitational.  The team competed against swimmers from Pittsburgh, Clarion University, California University of PA and Grove City College.

Freshman Mark Smith (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hinsdale Central) recorded a season-best time in the 100-yard butterfly as he finished second in 52.05.  Smith also turned in a second-place showing in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:58.41 while placing third in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:56.28.

Also competing in the 100-yard butterfly was senior Terrence Wong (Solon, Ohio/Solon) and sophomore Carter Sharer (Oakton, Va.) who finished third and fourth with times of 52.23 and 52.58, respectively.  

Finishing behind Smith in the 200-yard IM was freshman Bora Sebuktekin (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) in third with a time of 2:01.59.  Sebuktekin turned in another third-place finish after touching the wall with a season-best time of 2:12.13 in the 200-yard breaststroke.  Placing second ahead of him in the 200-yard breaststroke was sophomore Matthew Dezenzo (Woodbridge, N.J./St. Joseph) with a time of 2:11.34.  Dezenzo also recorded a time of 1:00.16 in the 100-yard breaststroke to place fourth.

Sophomore Alex Dintino (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) placed second in the 100-yard backstroke after touching the wall in 53.54.

Senior Eddie Sears (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) and junior Andrew Yee (Danville, Calif. / Monte Vista) each turned in a third- and fourth-place finish.  Sears had a time of 47.65 in the 100-yard freestyle to place third and a time of 21.54 in the 50-yard freestyle touching fourth.  Yee started the day with a season-best time of 9:48.74 in the 1,000-yard freestyle to place third before ending his day with a fourth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:52.85.

The Tartans will next compete in the UAA Championships starting on Wednesday, February 12 in Atlanta, Georgia at Emory University.
