Five Advance to Round of 16, Three Doubles Pairs in Quarterfinals

(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team opened the ITA Southeast Regional Championships with five individuals advancing to the round of 16 and three doubles pairs moving on to the quarterfinals. Play will continue on Sunday at University of Mary Washington.

Senior Duke Miller (Poway, Calif./Poway), who played for the regional championship last season, won his first two matches 6-3, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-2. He is seeded fourth and will face ninth-seeded Erik Lim of Johns Hopkins University in the round of 16.

Freshmen Abhishek Alla (Hyderabad, India/IMG Pendleton School) and Yuvraj Kumar () are eached seeded ninth and won their two opening round matches. Alla won 6-0, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-3 to begin his collegiate career and will face unseeded Jeremy Schwartz of Johns Hopkins as Kumar won by scores of 6-2, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-0 and will face top seeded Andy Hersh of Johns Hopkins.

Ninth seeded sophomore Christian Heaney-Secord (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) put away two unseeded opponents in the first two rounds by scores of 6-3, 6-2, and 6-3, 6-1 and will face fifth seeded Ben Hwang, also of Johns Hopkins.

The fifth Tartan to reach the round of 16 is freshman Kosuke Hasegawa (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont). Also seeded ninth for the tournament, Hasegawa won his opening match in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) and then won 6-0, 6-1. He will face seventh-seeded Ross Silverberg of Franklin & Marshall in the next round.

In doubles, Miller pairs with sophomore Will Duncan (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) and is the top seed for the tournament after reaching the finals last year. They advanced to the quarterfinals with 8-4 and 8-3 victories and will next face fifth-seeded Michael Holt and Taylor Shamshiri of Washington & Lee University.

Heaney-Secord and Hasegawa are seeded fifth and won 8-0 and 8-3 to start the tournament. They will face two seed Evan Charles and Donato Rizzolo of University of Mary Washington in the quarterfinals.

Alla and sophomore Bryce Beisswanger (Los Angeles, Calif./Viewpoint School) upset the three seed 8-3 in the first round and then won 8-1 to advance to play Tanner Brown and Lim of Johns Hopkins next.
