Tartans Round Up Competition at ITA Regional

(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team completed its competition at the ITA Southeast Regional on Sunday, September 30 with members playing in the quarterfinals of singles and semifinals of the doubles fields. The tournament was held at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va.

Freshman Abhishek Alla (Hyderabad, India/IMG Pendleton School) won his round of 16 match 6-1, 6-4 against Jeremy Schwartz of Johns Hopkins before falling to number one seed Andy Hersh of Johns Hopkins 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals. Prior to Hersh defeating Alla in the semifinals, he defeated Tartan freshman Yuvraj Kumar (New Delhi, India/Millfield School) in the round of 16, 6-2, 6-2.

Senior Duke Miller (Poway, Calif./Poway), sophomore Christian Heaney-Secord (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) and freshman Kosuke Hasegawa (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) also played in the round of 16 but fell to opponents from Johns Hopkins and Franklin & Marshal. Miller lost to Erik Lim of Johns Hopkins in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, while Heaney-Secord dropped his match to Ben Hwang of Johns Hopkins 6-1, 6-3. Hasegawa fell to Ross Silverberg 6-1, 6-3.

In doubles play, Miller and sophomore Will Duncan (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) won their quarterfinal match 8-4 over Michael Holt and Taylor Shamshiri of Washington & Lee University before Hersh and teammate Jeff Kamei topped them 8-5 in the semifinals.

Alla and sophomore Bryce Beisswanger (Los Angeles, Calif./Viewpoint School) lost a tight match with Tanner Brown and Lim of Hopkins in the quarterfinals 9-7 as Hasegawa and Heaney-Secord fell 8-5 to Evan Charles and Donato Rizzolo of Mary Washington in the quarterfinals.

The men's team will play its first dual match of the year on Saturday, October 6 when it hosts Division I Robert Morris University at 9:00 a.m. The team will also play Division I Duquesne University on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. and then host Amherst College at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 7.
