Tartans Take Second to Washington University in UAA Tennis Championship

(ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.) - The No. 9 Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team finished second at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship played this afternoon against No. 2 Washington University of St. Louis, falling in its first-ever appearance in the final, 7-2.

The Tartans number two doubles team of junior Bryce Beisswanger (Los Angeles, Calif./Viewpoint School) and freshman Kiril Kirkov (Tampa, Fla./C. Leon King) won 9-7, to give the team a point heading into singles play as the number one and number three pairs fell 8-5 and 8-6 in two back-and-forth matches. Beisswanger and Kirkov led 7-5 but freshman John Carswell and sophomore Josh Cogan tied it a 7-7, giving the Bears hope of sweeping doubles. The Tartans held serve to take an 8-7 lead and then won it by breaking the serve of the Bears.

Number four and six singles were first to finish their matches, setting the Tartans back 4-1, with number one singles finishing soon after giving the Bears the UAA title.

Number three singles is where the Tartans were able to get another point. Kirkov won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

The Tartans season is not over, as they await the NCAA draw on May 5.
