#10 Tartans Topped by #18 Case Western Reserve at ITA Indoor Championship

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) - The 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's team ran into 18th-ranked Case Western Reserve University on its home indoor courts at the Cleveland Racquet Club in the consolation semifinal of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship on Saturday. The Spartans were victorious by a 5-4 score evening the Tartans record at 3-3 while CWRU is now 5-1.

The Spartans swept doubles play to take a 3-0 advantage heading into singles.

Carnegie Mellon took the first three points in singles play picking up wins at first, second and fifth singles. Senior Chaz Downing (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) and freshman Clark Safran (Stanford, Calif. / Menlo School) both won in straight sets by the scores of 6-2, 6-1, as Downing won in the two spot and Clark in the fifth.

Senior Daniel Levine (Highland Park, Ill. / Boca Prep International School) knotted the team score at 3-3 with a three-set victory at first singles winning by the scores of 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. The Tartans fourth point came from junior Robert Levin (Virginia Beach, Va. / Princess Anne) at fourth singles. Levin lost the first set 6-7 (7) before winning the next two sets, 7-5 and 6-4, to close the match.

The Tartans return to the court against 13th-ranked Whitman College Sunday at 8:30 a.m. in the seventh-place match at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club in Cleveland.
