Tartans Record Three First Place Finishes at Dave Labor Invitational

(SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team competed at the Dave Labor Invitational hosted by Slippery Rock University Saturday, April 14 where three first-place finishes were recorded.

Freshmen Thomas Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) recorded one of those top finishes when he crossed with a time of 1:55.64 in the 800-meter run.  Sophomore Mike Standish (Washington, Pa./Trinity) placed third in the 800, finishing 1.88 seconds behind Vandenberg with a time of 1:57.52

Freshman Elliot Watson (Lebanon, Ohio/Miami Valley School) had the Tartans second victory.  Watson won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:19.62.  The third Cardinala and Gray victory was in the long jump by senior Ryan Kissell (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe).  Kissell jumped 6.23 meters and then placed second in the triple jump with a distance of 12.59 meters

Freshman George Degen (Madison, Wis./West) was third in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:36.86.

In the throwing events, sophomore Nathan Cheek (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) and senior Anthony Hernandez (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood) finished second and third in the hammer throw with tosses of 49.44 meters and 48.50 meters, respectively. Sophomore Zachary Erra-Hernandez (Las Cruces, N.M./Onate) turned in a second-place showing in the discus with a throw of 43.25 meters

Carnegie Mellon will be back in action Saturday, April 21 as they compete at the IUP Invitational.
