Tartans Win Seventh Straight Battle for the Obelisk; Duckworth Breaks Pole Vault Schol Record

The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team won the 15th Annual Battle for the Obelisk over Case Western Reserve University for the seventh straight Obelisk title for the Tartans. The men won the meet 95.5-40.5 and in a combined men's and women's score of 172.5-98. Along with the victory, the Tartans also collected six sweeps throughout the meet and broke two school records.

Tartans Impress Once Again in Classroom During Fall Semester

The fall athletics season was highlighted by four team NCAA appearances, three University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, and a football bowl victory, but the Tartans also continued their dominance in the classroom. Academically, 137 student-athletes recorded a perfect 4.0 grade-point average (GPA) with nearly 65 percent earning a 3.50 GPA or better.

In its 10th year celebrating academic and athletic achievement, the Carnegie Mellon Department of Athletics welcomed faculty and staff to the annual Student-Athlete Academic Achievement Celebration to honor 35 of the highest-achieving juniors and seniors across all colleges and athletics teams on Wednesday. The celebration is always held on Reading Day during finals week.

Junior Cody Breidenbach and freshman Matthew Short of the Carnegie Mellon University men’s indoor track and field team were named University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week. Breidenbach collected the accolade for field events after his performance at the Youngstown State University Icebreaker on Friday while Short earns the honor for his showing in running events at the same meet.

On Friday the Cardinal and Gray had members compete at the Youngstown State University Icebreaker while others took part in the 10th Annual Spartan Holiday Classic at Case Western Reserve University on Saturday.

15 Tartans Earn UAA Presidents Council Scholar-Athlete Recognition

Carnegie Mellon University had 15 student-athletes named to the 14th annual University Athletic Association (UAA) Presidents Council Scholar-Athlete Team, as announced by the league’s office on Tuesday, September 12. The 15 Tartans, six from men’s track and field men’s cross country, two from women’s track and field, and one each from women’s basketball, women’s golf, women’s soccer, softball, women’s swimming and diving, women’s tennis, and volleyball, received the prestigious honor along with 117 other student-athletes representing all eight UAA member institutions.
