Tartan Throwers and Distance Runners Shine at W&J Invitational

(WASHINGTON, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team competed at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational Saturday, March 31.
    
In the hammer throw which was held at Carnegie Mellon Friday evening March 30, Sophomore Nathan Cheek's (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) throw of 51.50 meters was not only his personal best throw, but won the event and set a new meet record.  Senior Anthony Hernandez (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood) also throw a personal best distance of 49.75 meters in the hammer to place third while sophomore Zachary Erra-Hernandez (Las Cruces, N.M./Onate) finished fifth with a throw of 46.13 meters.

Erra- Hernandez  won the shot put with a personal best throw of 15.75 meters and placed second in the discus throw with a personal best mark of 44.34 meters.  Cheek threw a distance of 14.00 meters in the shot to place fifth.

Sophomore Josh Newby (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) won the 1,500-meter run crossing the finish line in 4:00.69.  Senior Rob Morhard (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) ran to a sixth-place finish in the 1,500 with a time of 4:06.69 and sophomore Kenneth Murphy (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) placed seventh in 4:07.86.

Freshmen Thomas Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) turned in a second-place showing in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:54.85 as junior Graham Shorr (Brooklyn, N.Y./Poly Prep CDS) placed fourth in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 33:41.04.  

In the long jump, senior Ryan Kissell (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) placed third with a mark of 6.40 meters.

The team will be in competition again on Saturday, April 7 in Pittsburgh as they host their annual quad meet starting at 10:00 a.m.
