Men’s Track and Field Athlete Newby Honored By UAA; Coaching Staff Receives Recognition

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Josh Newby (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) was named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Most Outstanding Performer in the running events, as announced Thursday, May 3.  The honor comes after the Tartans finished second at the UAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Sunday, April 29.

The Carnegie Mellon men's coaching staff was also honored as the Coaching Staff of the Year under the direction of Head Coach Dario Donatelli, Associate Head Coach Gary Aldrich and assistant coaches Ken Hallinen, Tim O'Riley and Mike Stark.  This marks the fourth time in seven years that the staff has received the honor.

Newby claimed two UAA titles on his way to being named Most Outstanding Performer in the running events.  The sophomore started the championships on Saturday breaking the UAA record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:10.15 to win the title.  His time also broke his previous stadium record by over eight seconds.  Newby's second UAA victory came Sunday afternoon when he crossed the finish line with a time of 15:16.26 in the 5,000-meter race.

Newby became the second athlete in the 25-year history of the UAA to win both the 3,000-meter steeplechase and 5,000-meter race at the UAA Championships.
