Tartans Tie for Second at UAA Indoor Championships

(NEW YORK, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team finished tied for second at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Championships on Sunday, February 26 in New York City. The Tartans tied with Emory University while Washington University took the title.

Sophomore Mike Standish (Washington, Pa./Trinity) earned a UAA title in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.21 while freshman Thomas Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) finished fourth in 1:57.66. Sophomore Josh Newby (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) earned a fifth-place finish in the 3,000-meter run, crossing in 8:39.73.

Junior Daniel Ching (Trout Valley, Ill./The Culver Academies) earned All-UAA third team in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.60 seconds while the 4x400 relay team of Nealy, freshman Douglas O'Connell (Rye, N.Y./Fordham Prep), Standish and Titus earned All-UAA second team, finishing in a time of 3:24.66.

Junior Noel Titus (Bronx, N.Y./Choate Rosemary Hall) finished fifth in the 200-meter dash in 23.10 seconds and sixth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.26 seconds while junior Ben Nealy (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Egg Harbor Twp.) finished fifth in the 400-meter dash in 51.70 seconds.

In the remaining field events, junior Dan Cardenas Rivero (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) finished fourth in the pole vault, clearing a career-best 4.10 meters as senior Ryan Kissell (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) was fourth in the triple jump with a career-best mark of 13.49 meters.

Sophomore Zachary Erra-Hernandez (Las Cruces, N.M./Onate) became a UAA Champion in the shot put, winning the event with a mark of 15.87 meters. Freshman Gino Pilato (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) earned third team All-UAA with a mark of 14.61 meters. Both marks tied career bests for the men.
