Field Events Shine For Tartans at the VMI-W&L Carnival

(LEXINGTON, Va.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team traveled south to Lexington, Virginia for the VMI-W&L Track and Field Carnival hosted by Washington and Lee University at Foster Stadium.

Sophomore Zachary Erra-Hernandez (Las Cruces, N.M./Onate) led the Tartans on Saturday afternoon with a first-place finish in the shot put after throwing a distance of 14.92 meters.  The sophomore also placed sixth in the discus with a throw of 41.70 meters and eight in the hammer throw with a toss of 47.74 meters.  Sophomore Nathan Cheek (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) placed sixth in the hammer after throwing 48.44 meters while senior Anthony Hernandez (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood) placed seventh with a distance of 48.27 meters.

In the pole vault, junior Dan Cardenas Rivero (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) finished second after clearing a career-best height of 4.10 meters. Freshman Michael McDermott (Seekonk, Mass./La Salle Academy) also competed in the pole vault and placed sixth after clearing 3.80 meters.  McDermott then competed in the high jump and placed third with a height of 1.90 meters.

In the remaining field events, senior Ryan Kissell (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) placed third in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump with marks of 12.94 and  6.56 meters, respectively.

Sophomore Josh Newby (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) turned in a second-place finish in the 5,000-meter run, as he crossed the finish line with a time of 15:03.89. Sophomore Mike Standish (Washington, Pa./Trinity), junior Ben Nealy (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Egg Harbor Twp.), freshmen Thomas Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) and junior Noel Titus (Bronx, N.Y./Choate Rosemary Hall) ran the 4x400 meter relay finishing fourth in a time of 3:21.85.

The Tartans will be back in action when the travel to Washington & Jefferson Saturday, March 31.
