Top Three Finishes Highlight GaREAT Open Results

The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team traveled to Geneva, Ohio, for the Midwest Indoor Track and Field Open hosted at the Spire Institute. The meet consisted of teams from Division I, Division II and Division III.

Freshman Thomas Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) continued his hot start to the 2012 season with a third-place finish in the 600-meter run in 1:21.46. Junior Ben Nealy (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Egg Harbor Twp.) finished the same race in 1:25.03 for 13th place.

Junior Evan Gates (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) placed second in the 5,000-meter run, crossing the line in 15:03.52 while senior Rob Morhard (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) was 13th in 15:21.51.

The 60-meter hurdles saw junior Daniel Ching (Trout Valley, Ill./The Culver Academies) place sixth with a finishing time of 8.59 seconds.

Sophomore Mike Standish (Washington, Pa./Trinity) picked up a 10th-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.99. Junior Billy Littlefield (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) was the top Tartan in the 3,000-meter run finishing in a time of 9:02.95.

Recording top finishes for the Tartans was senior Ryan Kissell (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) in the 60-meter dash in 7.53 seconds, sophomore Noel Titus (Bronx, N.Y./Choate Rosemary Hall) in the 200-meter dash in 23.35 and freshman Max Wilkin (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) in the 400-meter dash in 56.11. Sophomore Josh Newby (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) was 25th in the mile run in 4:28.44.

In the field, freshman Michael McDermott (Seekonk, Mass./La Salle Academy) placed eighth in the high jump clearing 1.85 meters while junior Daniel Cardenas Rivero (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) placed 15th in the pole vault clearing 3.95 meters. Kissell placed ninth in the long jump with a mark of 6.22 meters and junior Patrick Robinson (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) threw the shot put 13.28 meters.

Sophomore Nathan Cheek (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) picked up a sixth-place finish in the weight throw with a mark of 15.36 meters as Robinson was 14th with a mark of 13.68 meters.

The Tartans will next compete against Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, February 4 in Cleveland, Ohio. The meet is set to start at 11:00 a.m.
