Tartans Set Two Meet Records at Day One of UAA Championships

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team hosted day one of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships Saturday, April 28 at Gesling Stadium.  After Saturday's events the Tartans are currently in first-place after six scored events with 71.5 points.  

Sophomore Zachary Erra-Hernandez (Las Cruces, N.M./Onate) started the day off setting a UAA record with a career-best toss of 16.56 meters in the shot put to win the event. Freshman Gino Pilato (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) and sophomore Nathan Cheek (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) completed the sweep for the Tartans in the shot put finishing second and third with season-best throws of 14.74 meters and 14.62 meters, respectively.

The Tartans second UAA record came in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, as sophomore Josh Newby (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) won the race with a time of 9:10.15.  He also broke his previous stadium record by over eight seconds.

In the long jump, senior Ryan Kissell (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) placed second with a career-best mark of 6.94 meters while freshman Michael McDermott (Seekonk, Mass./La Salle Academy) had a career-best day in the pole vault, clearing 4.11 meters to place third.

Senior Anthony Hernandez's (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood) career-best 50.93 meter toss in the hammer throw placed him fourth with Cheek and Erra-Hernandez finished fifth and sixth with throws of 49.93 meters and 49.83 meters.

The Tartans 4x800 relay team of junior Ben Nealy (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Egg Harbor Twp.), sophomore Kenneth Murphy (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley), sophomore Mike Standish (Washington, Pa./Trinity), freshmen Thomas Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) and crossed in 8:01.81 to place second.

The championships resume Sunday at 9:00 a.m. with the men's javelin followed by the women's triple jump, men's high jump and women's discus throw at 10:00 a.m. The first track event is set to begin at 11:30 a.m. with the 4x100-meter relay.
