Tartans Prepare for UAA Championships with Races at Bucknell and Mount Union

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) — The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team competed at both the Bucknell Tune Up hosted by Bucknell University and the Mount Union Last Chance Meet hosted by Mount Union College this weekend. Five Tartan men competed in middle distance events at the Bucknell Tune up against Division I, II & III runners. The men also competed against a number of Division III runners at the Mount Union Last Chance Meet.

At the Bucknell Tune Up, senior Evan Yukevich (Tokyo, Japan / American School in Japan) took first in the mile run in a time of 4:13, while fellow senior Liam Walsh (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard) followed closely behind in second place in 4:15. Sophomore Naren Karur (Santa Clara, Calif. / Saint Francis) took third in the event in 4:22 and freshman Elijah Sech (San Clemente, Calif. / San Clemente) placed fourth in 4:23. Junior Matt Karee (Elmira, N.Y. / Notre Dame) placed first in the 3,000-meter run in a time of 8:38. 

At Mount Union College, junior Logan Stahl (Oil City, Pa. / Oil City) placed fourth in the weight with a throw of 14.72 meters. Junior Matt Sloan (Harmony, Pa. / Seneca Valley) placed third in the high jump clearing 1.90 meters tying his indoor best. In the long jump, senior Fred Dauphin (Brockton, Mass. / Cardinal Spellman) placed third with a jump of 6.31 while Sloan placed sixth with a 6.18 meter leap for a career best. 

Freshman Justin Hsu (San Carlos, Calif. / Carlmont High) placed first in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:56 and fellow freshman Zachary Nowak (Manassas, Va. / Osbourn High School) placed second in 8:58.

The Tartans swept the mile run with senior Edward Goebel (Abington, Pa. / La Salle College HS) placing first with a time of 4:26, senior Harry Branch-Shaw (New York, N.Y. / Brooklyn Technical) placing second in 4:27, and sophomore Michael OBroin (Park Ridge, Ill. / Saint Ignatius College Prep) placing third in 4:27. 

Sophomore Heoseph Desir (Montville, N.J. / Montville Township) placed fifth in the 400-meter dash in a time of 52.17 and junior Michael Cai (Dumont, N.J. / Bergen County Academies) placed sixth in a time of 52.18.

The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Cai, freshman Zahir Saiyed (Fairfax, Va. / Fairfax), sophomore Graham Eversden (Chandler, Ariz. / Chandler) and Desir won in a time of 3:30 followed by two Carnegie Mellon teams in second and third. 

The Tartans will compete next at the UAA Championships hosted by New York University at the Armory in New York City on Saturday, February 29.
