Tartans Won 13 Events at Carnegie Mellon Last Chance Meet

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team hosted a Last Chance Meet on Thursday. The field was comprised of Chatham University, Pont Park University, Duquesne University, Robert Morris University and University of Pittsburgh.

The Tartans 4x100-meter relay team of graduate student Michael Cai (Dumont, N.J. / Bergen County Academies), freshman Clayton Long (Calhoun, Ga. / Cartersville), junior Verne Garin (San Jose, Calif. / Bellarmine College Prep) and junior Alex Halkias (Berlin, Conn. / Berlin) started the running events with a victory crossing in 42.76.

A personal-best time of 49.15 in the 400-meter race by sophomore Andrew McGovern (Lexington, Mass. / Lexington) took the top spot in the event. Sophomore Jackson Wood (Newbury, N.H. / Beverly) won the 800-meter run also in a personal-best time of 1:56.23.

Sophomore Thomas Rich (Rochester, N.Y. / Brighton) won the 400-meter and 110-meter hurdles. He recorded a personal-best time of 56.55 in 400-meter hurdles and crossed in 15.57 in the 110-meter hurdles. Halkias won the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.42.

Sophomore Jacob Hsu (Arcadia, Calif. / Arcadia) won the 3,000-meter run in 8:56.54.

The running events closed with the Cardinal and Gray 4x100-meter relay of Cai, graduate student Grant Johnson (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier), sophomore Pranav Rajbhandari (Marietta, Ga. / Walton) and McGovern crossing in 3:20.57 to take first.

In the high jump, freshman Sebastian Sanso (Santa Cruz, Calif. / Santa Cruz) cleared the bar at 1.81 meters to win the event. Classmate Casey Potrebic (Calistoga, Calif. / Justin-Siena) won the pole vault with a season-best mark of 4.21 meters.

Junior Bailey O'Malley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin) took first in the shot put with a toss of 14.38 meters while freshman Cody Breidenbach (Nazareth, Pa. / Nazareth Area) placed first in the hammer with a mark of 48.68 meters. Junior Len Huang (Holmdel, N.J. / Holmdel) closed the meet with a top finish in the discus with a personal-best throw of 44.71 meters.

The Tartans will have a few athletes competing at the Bucknell Invitational on Friday and Saturday prior to the University Athletic Association Outdoor Championships on April 23-24 at Washington University in St. Louis.
