Tartans Will Have Nine Athletes Compete at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team had nine athletes earn selection to the 2022 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships set to be held from May 26 through May 28 at Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio. This marks the most individual entries in school history for the Tartans.

Senior Justin Kiefel (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) is making a return trip to the outdoor championships and will once again compete in the long jump and triple jump. Kiefel currently ranks second in the long jump and 15th in the triple jump. Last spring he finished eighth in the triple jump. Kiefel earned All-America honors this year at the 2022 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in the triple jump by placing second.

Graduate student Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis. / Kettle Moraine Lutheran) will compete in the shot put and discus throw for the second consecutive year. Miller currently ranks third in the shot put and 11th in the discus throw. At last year's meet, Miller placed second in the shot put and seventh in the discus to earn All-America recognition. The graduate student also competed in the 2022 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships where he placed second in the shot put.

Senior Michael OBroin ( Park Ridge, Ill. / Saint Ignatius College Prep), who placed second in the 5,000-meter run at the indoor championships this year, will compete in the 5,000-meter run on the outdoor track. OBroin enters the race with the fifth-best time in the nation and is the fourth Tartan to compete in the distance event at the outdoor championships.

Senior Varun Narayan (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton) will compete in the long jump for the first time on the national stage and is currently ranked 14th nationally. Senior Grant Johnson (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) will also be making his first appearance at the national meet and will compete in the 400-meter hurdles. His time is ranked 10th nationally and his selection marks the second straight for the Tartans and the third time ever in the event.

Freshman Cody Breidenbach (Nazareth, Pa. / Nazareth Area) will compete in the hammer throw where he ranks 16th. Breidenbach also competed at the indoor championships alongside Kiefel and Miller in the field events and earned All-America recognition with a seventh-place finish in the weight throw. Two other Tartans have competed in the hammer throw with Zachary Erra-Hernandez earning All-America recognition in 2014.

Freshman Aleksei Seletskiy (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto) earned a selection to the outdoor meet in the 1,500-meter run after competing in the mile during the indoor national meet. Seletskiy's time in the 1,500-meter run is 19th nationally and he will represent the Tartans in the race for the eighth time in program history.

Sophomore Alex Ivanov (Newton, Mass. / Newton) will compete in the 800-meter run with a time that currently ranks 21st nationally. He will be the second Tartan to compete in the 800-meter run and the first since 2015.

Sophomore Thomas Rich (Rochester, N.Y. / Brighton) is the first Tartan to compete in the decathlon and earned selection to the meet with a score that ranks 13th in the nation.

The start time for events will be released on Wednesday, May 25.
