Tartans 4x800-Meter Relay Breaks School Record at Opening Day of the UAA Outdoor Championships

(CHICAGO, Ill.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team competed at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Championships on Saturday. The two-day championship meet is being hosted by the University of Chicago. The Tartans have 67.5 points and are currently first heading into the final day.
Top Performances on the Track:
- Sophomores Colin McLaughlin and Sean Dutton along with juniors Alex Ivanov and Andrew McGovern won the 4x800-meter relay crossing in school record time of 7:39.96. They broke the record held by Marc-Daniel Julien, Evan Larrick, Owen Norley and Thomas Vandenberg of 7:39.98 set in 2015.
- Senior Elijah Sech placed second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:48.32.
- Sophomore Matthew Coyle ran a personal-best time in the 10,000-meter run and placed second after crossing in 30:17.90.
- Junior Thomas Rich advanced to the finals in the 110-meter hurdles after crossing with a time of 16.01 in the preliminaries.
- Junior Austin Weltz qualified for the finals in the 400-meter run after finishing in 51.03.
- Ivanov and senior Leland Davies will both run in the finals of the 800-meter run after posting times of 1:55.05 and 1:55.12 in the preliminaries.
- McGovern will run in the finals of the 400-meter hurdles after qualifying with a time of 56.34 on Saturday. Freshman Tyler Williams will join McGovern in the finals after recording a time of 59.58 in the preliminaries.
- The 200-meter dash finals will have senior Alex Halkias apart of the race after he ran 22.73 in the preliminaries.
Top Performances in the Field:
- Sophomore Cody Breidenbach won the UAA title in the hammer when he marked with a career-best throw of 56.65 meters.
- Senior Bailey O'Malley and freshman Sam Alligood placed second and third, respectively, in the shot put. O'Malley marked at 15.04 meters with Alligood at 13.95 meters.
- Sophomore Casey Potrebic placed third in the pole vault clearing the bar at 4.30 meters.
