Tartans Win UAA Indoor Championships

(NEW YORK, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team won the 2024 University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by New York University at The Armory in New York, New York. The Tartans scored 177 points to finish ahead of Emory University with 137 points. The UAA Championship marks the fourth in program history for the indoor season and first since 2019. The 177 team points scored for the Tartans is the second most at the UAA Indoor Championships by a team.

Top Performances on the Track:

  • After posting a UAA and school record in the prelims of the 800-meter run on Saturday, senior Andrew McGovern won the finals with a time of 1:51.71.
  • Junior Colin McLaughlin won the 3,000-meter race after crossing in 8:21.98. Senior Jacob Hsu and junior Matthew Coyle crossed in sixth and seventh with times of 8:27.97 and 8:28.63.  
  • Senior Thomas Rich took second in the 60-meter hurdles crossing in 8.40.
  • In the mile run, freshman Matthew Short placed third with a personal-best time of 4:13.60. Placing fifth was junior Eamon Brady in 4:15.06 followed by junior Aleksei Seletskiy in seventh with a time of 4:16.92.
  • Freshman Matthew Yu took third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.45.
  • The 60-meter dash saw Yu and sophomore Bennett Wong place fifth and sixth, respectively, with times of 7.121 and 7.126.    
  • Graduate student Leland Davies ran a personal-best time of 49.94 to place seventh in the 400-meter run.
  • The championships closed with the Tartans 4x400-meter relay team of sophomore Jeremy Ocloo, Davies, senior Alex Ivanov and McGovern crossing with a season-best time of 3:22.63 to place fourth.

Top Performances in the Field:

  • Sophomore Sam Alligood won the shot put with a personal-best throw of 15.77 meters. Graduate student Bailey O'Malley turned in a third place showing after tossing the element 14.26 meters. Sophomore Victor Crawshaw placed eighth with a toss of 12.73 meters.
  • In the pole vault freshman Ryan Handron cleared the bar at 4.66 meters breaking his own school record height to place second. His previous high mark was 4.62 meters.
  • Sophomore Christian Duckworth and freshman Solomon Glavach both cleared the bar at 4.51 meters with Duckworth placing sixth and Glavach seventh.
  • Junior Sebastian Sanso took third in the triple jump with a personal-best mark of 13.95 meters while sophomore Morgan Johnson placed seventh with a jump of 13.49 meters.

  • The Tartans will next compete at the All-Atlantic Regional Championships on March 1-2.
