McGovern and Connelly Receive Mid-Atlantic Regional Awards

(NEW ORLEANS, La.) – Senior Andrew McGovern of the Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team as well as associate head coach Tim Connelly were honored by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) with outstanding regional recognition.

McGovern was named Mid-Atlantic Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year while Connelly was named Mid-Atlantic Region Indoor Men's Assistant Coach of the Year,

This marks the first honor for the indoor season for both McGovern and Connelly with McGovern receiving the honor for the 2023 outdoor season while Connelly has received the same accolade for the outdoor season in 2022 and 2023. McGovern is the program's first men's track and field athlete to garner a regional award for the indoor season.

The senior is ranked sixth nationally in the 800-meter run at 1:50.40. He helped the Tartans win their fourth University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Championship, as he ended the championships with two titles. He was then named UAA Most Outstanding Performer in Running Events after he won the UAA title in the 800-meter run with a time in the finals of 1:51.71. In the prelims of the 800, the senior posted a school and UAA record time of 1:50.40. McGovern was also part of the distance medley relay that also won the UAA title with a UAA record time of 9:56.72. He then ended the championships on the 4x400-meter relay team that placed fourth with a season-best time of 3:22.63.

McGovern will continue his season at this weekend's NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He will compete in the 800-meter race for the second time in his career. McGovern earned All-America honors in the event after placing sixth at the championships last season.

In his ninth year as associate coach, Connelly mentored the distance runners to scoring 61 of the teams 177 points at the UAA Indoor Championships. The distance medley relay team along with McGovern set UAA meet records on their way to winning the UAA title, as Connelly also coached the junior Colin McLaughlin in 3,000-meter race where he won the UAA title and set a school record in the event earlier this season.
