Rich Currently Second in Heptathlon Following First Day at NCAA Indoor Championships, McGovern Competes in 800

(VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.) – Seniors Thomas Rich and Andrew McGovern of the Carnegie Mellon University men's indoor track and field team competed at the first day of the 2024 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday. The championships are being held at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

NCAA Performances:

  • Following the first day of the heptathlon, in which four events took place, Rich is in second place with 2,916 points. Rich will enter Saturday behind the top spot by 128 points.
  • Rich started the day with a personal-best time of 7.18 in the 60-meter dash. He then moved onto the long jump where he marked at 6.66 meters. The senior took second in the shot put with a career-best throw of 12.74 meters.
  • Rich closed the first day of the heptathlon clearing the bar at 1.89 meters in the high jump and placed fourth.
  • Senior Andrew McGovern ran in the preliminaries of the 800-meter run and posted a time of 1:51.16. The senior missed the final by .03 seconds after posting the sixth best time of the preliminaries. The top two from each of the three heats advance to the finals with the next two top times. McGovern ran in the fastest heat, placing fifth.

Up Next:

  • The championships continue on Saturday, March 9 with Rich starting off in the 60-meter hurdles of the heptathlon at 10:00 a.m. Junior Colin McLaughlin will compete in the 3,000-meter race at 6:00 p.m.
