Peel Named UAA Athlete of the Week for Third Time

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – Junior Emily Peel (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) of the Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team has been named University Athletic Association (UAA) Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week following her performance in leading the Tartans to a 1-1 mark in UAA play over the weekend.  This is the third time this season Peel has received the honor.

In the Tartans' 65-56 victory over Brandeis Sunday afternoon, Peel recorded a career-high 33 points on 14-of-16 (87.5%) shooting from the floor and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.  This marked the second time this season that Peel has scored 30 or more points in a contest.  The last time a Tartan scored 30 or more prior to Peel was in 1989. Peel also becomes the first player in school history to score 30 or more twice in a season since the start of the UAA (1987-88).  The junior started the week scoring 19 points on 6-of-10 (60%) shooting and grabbing nine rebounds in a setback to New York University.  For the week, Peel shot 77% (20-26) from the floor, 80% (12-15) from the foul line and averaged 26.0 points and 8.5 rebounds.

Peel currently leads the UAA in blocked shots with 1.8 per game while ranking second in scoring and rebounding with 16.1 points per game and 9.7 rebounds per game. The junior also ranks second in the UAA and 12th in the nation with a field goal percentage of .571.

The Tartans will next be in action when they travel to the Windy City, for a 6:00 p.m. tip against No. 2 University of Chicago on Friday, February 10.
