Tartans Fall to Eagles at Home

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team dropped an University Athletic Association (UAA) contest at home Friday night to the Eagles of Emory University, 83-60. Four double-digit scorers for the Tartans was not enough as the Eagles took 31 more shots than the Tartans in the win.

The Tartans (8-15, 2-10) opened the game with a 9-0 run behind three three-pointers, including two straight from freshman Gabrielle West (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame). They kept a nine-point advantage halfway through the period when a three-pointer by freshman Aspen McKeever (Durango, Colo./Durango) gave the Tartans a 21-12 lead.

Emory (17-6, 8-4) then went on its run. After missing their first seven shots to open the game, the Eagles went on a 15-0 run where they made 6-of-8 from the field and were led by sophomore Hannah Lilly's two three-pointers.

Tartan sophomore Jacquie Shaw (Portland, Ore./Grant) stopped the Eagles run after a five-minute scoreless stretch with a layup, as junior Emily Peel (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) followed with a layup to bring the Tartans within two points, 27-25, with 2:49 to go in the half. Emory then extended their lead to nine at the break with a 10-3 stretch to close the period.

The Tartans used a 13-8 run over the first six minutes of the second period to pull within four points, 45-41, but were unable to inch back any more as the Eagles went on for the 23-point win.

West led the Tartans with 14 points while Shaw tallied 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists. McKeever scored 11 off the bench for the Tartans as Peel was just short of her seventh double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Senior Jennifer Larsen (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) led in assists with five and also grabbed seven boards.

The Eagles were led by Lilly's 19 points and junior Misha Jackson's 17 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard Savannah Morgan dropped in 15 points and assisted on 13 baskets while picking up five steals. Senior Becca Feldman was the fourth Eagle to score in double digits with 12 points.

The Tartans will return to their home court on Sunday, February 19 when they host #11 University of Rochester at 2:00 p.m.
