West Ties Career-High in Tartans 69-46 Win Over Oberlin

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Improving to a 4-4 record, the Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team cruised to a victory over visiting Oberlin College, 69-46, Friday evening on the hardwood of Skibo Gymnasium.  The Yeowomen are now 3-5 overall.
    
In the first eight and a half minutes, the two teams kept close to each other with the biggest lead being the Yeowomen's 7-4 lead before the Tartans heated up.
    
Freshman guard Chandler Caufield (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) hit a three-point shot to give Carnegie Mellon a 12-10 lead with 11:34 remaining in the half.  Caufield finished the day tying her career-high of five points.  She also tied a career-high with four assists and set her career-high at two steals.
    
Following Caufield's three-pointer, Carnegie Mellon finished the half on a 26-9, which included eight-straight points for the host Tartans rolling to a 19-point lead at the half, 38-19.
    
Carnegie Mellon was led on the scoring sheet by another freshman guard Gabrielle West (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame).  She finished with 19 points tying her career high set early this week against Penn State-Altoona.
    
West finished the day 4-of-8 from three-point range, and overall the team shot 7-for-15 on three-point shots converting 46.7%.
    
The Tartans forced Oberlin to turn the ball over 25 times.  Sophomore Jennifer Elkin (Baltimore, Md./Carver Center for Arts & Tech) picked up a career-high five steals for Carnegie Mellon.  As a team, the Cardinal and Gray picked up 16 steals. Senior Jennifer Larsen (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) was the only other Tartan to score in double figures, as she tied her season-high with 12 points.
    
Oberlin was led in scoring by Malisa Hoak who scored 16 points and added six assists.  Also turning in a solid performance for the Yeowomen was Kelly Warlich who finished with a double-double.  She had 11 points and 12 rebounds.  
    
The visitors struggled from the field shooting 32.8%, while Carnegie Mellon shot 42.9%.
    
The Tartans return to action Saturday when they host Point Park in Skibo Gymnasium.  Tip-off is set for 2:00 pm.
