Late Run Stops Tartans on the Road

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team fell in a tight battle with Denison University on Saturday, November 26 in the UAA/NCAC Challenge at Case Western Reserve University. The Tartans (2-2) led for all but five minutes of the game, coming up short in the end 63-58 to the Big Red who is 4-1.

Junior forward Emily Peel (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) opened the game with three made baskets for the Tartans which were followed by three straight by sophomore forward Jacquie Shaw (Portland, Ore./Grant), as the Tartans took a 12-4 lead seven minutes into the game. Senior Jennifer Larsen (Exeter, N.H.) answered a Denison layup with a three-pointer on the team's next possession to give the Cardinal and Gray a nine-point advantage.

The Big Red knocked the deficit down to six but freshman Gabrielle West (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) hit a three-pointer to fuel a 9-3 run by the Tartans to extend the lead to 12 points with 5:35 to go in the period. The advantage would stay 12 points in favor of the Tartans when freshman MacKenzie Boyd (Plano, Texas/Plano West) hit a trey at the buzzer for a 37-25 halftime lead.

Peel opened the second half with a layup before the Big Red went on a 10-0 run to make the score 39-35 with 13:42 to go. The teams traded hoops before Denison would take its first lead of the game on a Jane Windler jump shot at 4:55. Windler then stroked another shot for the 53-50 lead closing out a 9-0 run.

Denison would hold on to the lead matching the Tartans point-for-point and draining four-of-four free throw attempts down the stretch for the 63-58 victory.

The Tartans were led by West's game and career-high 17 points. Shaw followed with 15 points and eight rebounds while Peel tallied 13 points and eight rebounds. Larsen pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and the Tartans won the battle on the boards 42-31.

Denison was led by Windler's 15 points and six rebounds as three others scored in double figures.

The Tartans will next face Kenyon College (3-2) on Sunday, November 27 at 2:00 p.m. in its second match of the UAA/NCAC Challenge at Case Western Reserve.
