Tartans Fall 50-47 in Home Contest

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team fell at home Wednesday night, 50-47, to Baldwin-Wallace College despite holding the Yellow Jackets to their second-lowest point total of the season. The Tartans are now 2-4 overall while the Yellow Jackets improve to 4-1.

Junior forward Emily Peel (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) led the Tartans with 20 points and eight rebounds, shooting 6-of-8 in the first half for 13 points, as the Tartans led 25-23 at the break.

Baldwin-Wallace took its first lead five minutes into the second period when leading scorer Audrey Smolik hit her first three-pointer of the game to give the visitors a 30-27 edge. After a shot clock violation by the Tartans and a layup by the Jackets' Jessica Carpenter, Peel brought the Tartans back to a tie at 32-32 with two jumpers and a free throw.

The lead would change hands five more times before the Yellow Jackets took the final lead at 44-43 with 3:18 to play.

Sophomore guard Jacquie Shaw (Portland, Ore./Grant) twice brought the Tartans within one point but a Smolik jumper with time running down on the shot clock gave the Yellow Jackets a three-point cushion with 23 seconds to play.

A tying three-point attempt by the Tartans was short and after a missed free throw by the Jackets, the Tartans weren't able to get a good look at the hoop.

Freshman Gabrielle West (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) finished with 11 points and six rebounds as Shaw tallied nine points and seven boards to go with three assists.

Smolik led with 16 points, 14 coming in the second half, while Nancy Coulter had 13 points and 10 rebounds in the post for the Yellow Jackets.

The Tartans remain home for their next contest which will take place Sunday, December 4 at 3:00 p.m. against Penn State Altoona.
