Tartans Claw Back, Fall at Buzzer to Emory

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - Sophomore Gabrielle West (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) scored nine of her team-high 14 points in the last two minutes of the game helping the Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team climb back to tie the game, only to see Emory University hit a shot at the buzzer to steal a road win 66-64 in University Athletic Association action Sunday afternoon.

West's nine points came all on three-pointers as she tied the game with 2.7 seconds to go after the Tartans (10-6, 2-3) trailed by 11 points with three minutes to play. Junior Jacquie Shaw (Portland, Ore./Grant) started the Tartans' 13-2 run with a layup as West hit 3-of-4 from behind the arc to go with another Shaw basket.

After a timeout by Emory (14-2, 4-1) , Misha Jackson hit a 12-footer at the buzzer to lift the Eagles who never trailed in the second half.

The Tartans did cut the deficit to two, 49-47, at the 10-minute mark after back-to-back baskets by senior Emily Peel (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) who was perfect from the field at 6-for-6.

An 8-0 run by the Eagles followed pushing the advantage to 10 with seven minutes to go. The teams traded points until the final three minutes when West and Shaw led the Tartans back.

The Tartans led by as many as five points in the first stanza, before Emory took a 34-31 lead into the locker room. Carnegie Mellon shot 50% from the field for the half but the Eagles hit two more three-pointers and one more free throw to count for the difference.

Aside from West's 14 points, Peel finished with 13 while sophomore Chandler Caufield (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) scored 11 and Shaw 10. Freshman Liza Otto (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) helped the Tartans outrebound their opponent for the 15th time with 10 boards as Peel hauled in nine.

Savannah Morgan led the Eagles, who shot 36% from the field, with 18 points as Hannah Lilly scored 15.

The Tartans will next face #7 Washington University (14-2, 4-1) on Friday, January 25 at 6:00 p.m. at home.
