Murphy Records 11th Double-Double in Setback at #5 Washington U.

(ST. LOUIS, Mo.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team traveled to St. Louis, Mo. to play #5 Washington University in University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Sunday, February 23.   The Tartans fell by the score 76-57.  The loss evens Carnegie Mellon's record at 12-12, 3-9, as the Bears are now 22-2, 12-1.

Washington opened the game on an 11-4 run as they converted five of its first seven shots.  With Carnegie Mellon trailing 18-14 with 13 minutes left in the half, the Bears scored eight straight to push the lead to 28-16

Late in the half, Carnegie Mellon used a 9-1 run to cut the lead to 33-28 after Washington took its largest lead of the contest.  During the stretch, senior Jacquie Shaw (Portland, Ore./Grant) accounted for six points.  Over the last four minutes of the half, the home team outscored the Tartans 9-4 to go into the break leading 42-32.

The Bears started the second stanza on an 11-2 run extending its halftime lead to 53-34 at the 15:47 mark.  Carnegie Mellon cut the Bears advantage to 15 at 60-45 on a pair of made foul shots by freshman Lisa Murphy (McLean, Va./McLean), but that was as close as the Tartans came.  Washington maintained control of the game the rest of the way and went on for the 76-57 victory.

Carnegie Mellon shot 38% from the floor to Washington's 445%.  Murphy led the Tartans with 15 points and 11 rebounds to record her 11th double-double of the season. Shaw chipped in with 13 points while sophomore Liza Otto (Glastonbury, Conn.) finished with 11.

Melissa Gilkey recorded a game-high 18 points as Kristin Anda and Alyssa Johanson totaled 13 and 11.

Carnegie Mellon will conclude its regular season Saturday, March 1 when they host Case Western Reserve at 3:00 p.m.
