Women’s Basketball Drop 73-49 Contest at #9 Washington U.

(ST. LOUIS, Mo.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team continued University Athletic Association (UAA) play with a 73-49 setback on Friday, January 30 against the ninth-ranked Bears of Washington University in St. Louis. Carnegie Mellon is now 11-6, 2-4 UAA while Washington moves to 16-1, 5-1 UAA.

The first six minutes saw four lead changes before Carnegie Mellon scored eight straight points over the next three minutes to claim a 16-9 lead at the 11:11 mark. Over the nine minute stretch, the Tartans converted six of their first eight shots including a 4-of-4 effort from behind the arc, with two long balls coming from senior Chandler Caufield (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny).

A minute later, the Bears started a 12-3 run and took a 24-21 lead with 6:24 to play in the half.  Washington continued to maintain control of the half and pushed its run to 27-7 to close the half with a 39-25 advantage.
 
The Tartans finished the half shooting 55.6% (10-18) and converted 5-of-9 from behind the arc while the Bears shot 42.4% (14-33) and 7-of-10 from long range.  

Carnegie Mellon converted just one of its first ten shots to start the second half as the Bears extended their lead to 50-27.  Washington continued to control the contest winning 73-49.  Carnegie Mellon shot 41.8% from the floor as Washington shot 43.5%.  The Tartans were outrebounded for just the second time this season, 40-33.

Sophomore Lisa Murphy (McLean, Va./McLean) led the Tartans with 14 points and nine rebounds while rejecting four Bear shots.  Caufield along with junior Lindsay Poss (Poolesville, Md.) each chipped in with nine.

Three Bears recorded double figures with Natalie Orr leading the way with 17 points while going a perfect 5-of-5 from behind the arc.  Melissa Gilkey and Maddy Scheppers finished with 15 and 12, respectively.

The Tartans will be back on the hardwood on Sunday, February 1 when they travel to the University of Chicago for a 2:00 p.m. CST tip.
