Two Tartans Start Season with Double-Doubles

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team opened the season with an 80-43 victory against Allegheny College at home on Wednesday, November 8 behind a pair of double-doubles by junior Catherine Or and sophomore Savannah Gibbs.

How it Happened

  • It took a minute for the teams to settle in with the Gators holding a 3-2 lead two minutes into the game before the Tartans scored eight straight to lead 10-3 with 5:12 to go in the first quarter.
  • A minute later the Tartans would lead by 10 before the Gators pulled it back to five points on a fast break layup and free throw by Emily Lauer.
  • The first quarter ended with the Tartans leading 25-12 with Gibbs scoring 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor.
  • The Tartans continued to extend the lead and shot 40.0% from the floor in the second quarter to 20.0% for the Gators to lead 45 to 20 at the break.
  • Sophomore Piper Ligotti led the Tartans in the second quarter with nine points on 4-of-6 shooting, including the lone three-pointer of the frame for the home team.
  • Both teams shot 31.3% in the third quarter with junior Anisha Chintala leading the Tartans with six points.
  • Or picked up seven of her game-high 16 rebounds in the third quarter while scoring five points.
  • The Tartans exploded for another 22 points in the final quarter with eight players scoring and held Allegheny without a point for the final four minutes of the game.

For the Tartans

  • Gibbs led the team with 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.
  • Or finished with 16 rebounds and 14 points.
  • Chintala recorded 14 points and five assists.

For the Gators

  • Sarah Santicola finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Lauer closed the game with 13 points.
  • Jess Bickart and Branygan Bianchin each had three assists.

Notes

  • The Tartans outrebounded the Gators, 58-29.
  • The Tartans have won the past 10 meetings against the Gators.
  • Or now has 21 career double-doubles while Gibbs has four career double-doubles.
  • This game marks the fifth time both Or and Gibbs tallied a double-double in the same game.
