Four Reach Double Figures in Road Loss at WashU

(ST. LOUIS, Mo.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team played its third straight University Athletic Association (UAA) road contest on Friday, January 26 at Washington University in St. Louis. The Tartans shot 51.7% from the field but gave up 90 points to the Bears and fell 90-81 to move to 10-7 overall and 2-4 in the UAA. WashU is now 10-7 and 3-3.

How It Happened

  • The game was tied five times in the first quarter with the Tartans shooting 53.3% to start the game, only to trail by six at the quarter break.
  • Sophomore Savannah Gibbs scored the first five points of the second quarter to pull the Tartans within one, 22-21, before the Bears answered with nine straight to lead 31-21 with 4:57 to play in the half.
  • A three-pointer by freshman Kayla Delmore was the last points of the half and the Tartans trailed 36-32 after Gibbs led all scorers with eight points in the quarter.
  • The halftime stats reflected the back-and-forth game as WashU had one more basket and one more free throw made than the Tartans with the rebounding tied at 20 apiece.
  • After the Bears led by seven early in the third quarter, the Tartans pulled to within one once again, this time on a second-chance opportunity by junior Anisha Chintala.
  • The Tartans tried to keep it close but the Bears shot 11-for-15 from the field, including 4-for-6 from long range in the third quarter and led by 10 going into the final period, 65-55.
  • The Tartans had their best showing from the field in the fourth quarter, hitting 69.2% of their attempts but the Bears kept with them at 52.6% and made 5-of-5 from the foul line to keep at least a nine-point lead through the final four minutes.

For the Tartans

  • Gibbs finished with 17 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field and 7-of-9 from the free throw line.
  • Junior Catherine Or, Delmore, and freshman Allie Heyer each drained two three-pointers and finished with 10 points apiece.
  • Or led the Tartans with seven rebounds and four assists.

For the Bears

  • Lexy Harris recorded 32 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double.
  • Sidney Rogers scored 12 off the bench while Alyssa Hughes scored 11 off the bench.

Notes

  • The Tartans shot better than 50% for the third time in UAA play, this being their first loss.
