(CHICAGO, Ill.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team visited the University of Chicago on Sunday, January 28 for a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest. The Tartans led early in the third quarter but the Maroons were able to protect their home court by shooting 61.1% in the final frame to win, 72-58. The Tartans are now 10-8 overall and 2-5 in the UAA while the Maroons, who are receiving votes in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, are now 12-6 and 5-2.

How It Happened

  • Junior Catherine Or started the game with a three-pointer and her seventh point of the first frame gave the Tartans a 15-11 lead with 4:50 to go.
  • The Maroons closed the first quarter on a 10-0 run to lead 21-15.
  • The Tartans used a 13-4 run over the first 5:22 of the second quarter to take a 28-25 lead after a three-pointer by freshman Kayla Delmore.
  • The lead then swapped hands five times with UChicago holding a one-point advantage, 33-32 at halftime.
  • Sophomore Piper Ligotti scored the first basket of the second half off a feed from Or that would be the last lead of the game for the Tartans.
  • UChicago then scored seven straight before Or connected on a jumper to score her 1,000th career point and stop a two-minute scoring drought for the Tartans.
  • The Maroons kept the lead and held an eight-point advantage at the quarter's end after a 10-4 run over the final five minutes of the frame.
  • The Tartans pulled the game to six points twice in the fourth quarter before the Maroons took their first double-digit lead since the end of the first quarter with a jumper by Ellie Gross that made it 56-46 with 8:35 to go.
  • Sophomore Savannah Gibbs answered right away to again make it an eight-point game but the Maroons would once again push it to double digits and led by as many as 16 points before Or's final basket of the day to end the game.

For the Tartans

  • Or led the Tartans with 19 points.
  • Gibbs finished the game with 14 points and a team-high six rebounds.
  • Junior Anisha Chintala scored eight points and had five assists.

For the Maroons

  • Marissa Powe led with 23 points while Gross finished with 22 points.
  • Sophia North had 10 points.
  • Kate Gross and Lindsey Carter led the team with eight rebounds apiece.
  • Sidney Rogers scored 12 off the bench while Alyssa Hughes scored 11 off the bench.

Notes

  • Or is the 14th Tartan to score 1,000 career points and the fourth player to reach the milestone as a junior joining CMU Hall of Famer Kassie Segmiller (1978-82), Jeanine Megahan (1990-94), and Lisa Murphy (2013-2017).
  • Or is the ninth player in program history to score more than 1,000 points and grab more than 500 rebounds.
