Ligotti Scores Career-High as Bears Narrowly Top Tartans

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team dropped a 71-69 game to Washington University in St. Louis on Friday, February 2. The Tartans led going into the fourth quarter but a comeback by the Bears dropped the Tartans to 10-9 for the season and 2-6 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Bears are now 12-7 and 5-3.

How It Happened

  • The Tartans used a 13-0 run midway through the first quarter to lead by 12 points, 19-7, with sophomore Piper Ligotti scoring six straight during the three-minute span.
  • WashU scored the final seven points of the quarter to make it 19-14 in favor of the home squad.
  • The Tartans continued to hold the lead in the second quarter and pushed it up to 14 points with a 15-4 run the closed with a three-pointer by Ligotti.
  • The Tartans shot 40.0% in the third quarter and held a double-digit lead for the final 5:39 of the frame while WashU hit 41.7% from the field in the frame.
  • The Tartans went cold in the fourth quarter and the Bears steadily built a 20-4 run to take their first lead of the game since the first quarter when Sidney Rogers scored on a fast break.
  • The teams traded baskets over the final 3:28 with the lead changing hands twice.
  • With 37 seconds to go, sophomore Kayla Delmore drained a three-pointer to tie the score at 69-all.
  • After a timeout by the Bears, they ran the clock down and Lexy Harris scored in the paint off a dish from J. Rich with the shot clock running down.
  • The Tartans' shot at the buzzer to tie the game bounced up and off the rim.

For the Tartans

  • Ligotti finished a career-high 18 points with seven rebounds.
  • Delmore scored 13 points while making two from behind the arc.
  • Junior Savannah Gibbs and freshman Allie Heyer both finished with 11 points.
  • Heyer had a team-high eight rebounds while Gibbs had a game-high five assists.

For the Bears

  • Jessica Brooks scored 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.
  • Harris finished a game-high 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting.
  • The Bears finished the game shooting 45.0% from the field after a 64.7% effort in the fourth quarter.

Notes

  • Both teams shot at least 20 free throws for the second straight meeting.
