Five Score in Double Figures in Loss at Brandeis

(WALTHAM, Mass.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team hit the road for University Athletic Association (UAA) action to face Brandeis University on Friday, February 9. The Tartans dropped the game by two points, 72-70, to move to 10-11 for the season and 2-8 in the UAA. The Judges moved to 5-16 and 1-9.

How It Happened

  • The Tartans outscored the Judges in the first quarter, 21-16, with junior Anisha Chintala leading the team with eight points and sophomore Savannah Gibbs scoring six points.
  • Brandeis had a six-point run with back-to-back three-pointers by Caitlin Gresko to take a 16-15 lead before the Tartans closed the quarter with six straight for the five-point lead.
  • The teams each scored 14 points in the second quarter to keep the Tartans in the lead by five at the break.
  • Brandeis had a seven-point run with a free throw between two three-pointers and the Tartans had a six-point run with a jumper by junior Catherine Or, a layup by Chintala, and a layup by freshman Allie Heyer.
  • The Tartans came out of the halftime locker room making the first two baskets with layups by Chintala and sophomore Ava Arias to hold their largest lead at nine points.
  • Another pair of three-pointers by the Judges brought their deficit to three before the Tartans answered with an 18-10 run to close the frame and lead by 11 heading into the final period.
  • Brandeis stormed back to tie the game at 61-61 with four minutes left in the game after their fourth three-pointer of the quarter.
  • The Judges would then take a 65-61 and later lead 71-65 with 29 seconds to go.
  • With Brandeis ahead 72-67, Arias drained a three-pointer for the Tartans with two seconds to go to make it a two-point game.
  • Brandeis called timeout to advance the ball to half court and were able to secure the inbounds pass to run out the clock before the Tartans could try to foul to extend the game.

For the Tartans

  • Five players scored in double figures with Chintala and Or leading with 16 points apiece.
  • Gibbs finished with 13 points and Arias and freshman Kayla Delmore each scored 10.
  • Gibbs led with 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season and tied Chintala for the lead in assists with three.

For the Judges

  • Caitlin Gresko scored led the team with 19 points.
  • Lulu Ohm finished with 13 points, Francesca Marche had 12 points and Abby Kennedy scored 11.
  • The Judges finished with 13 three-pointers with Gresko hitting 5-of-8.
  • Ohm led all players with seven assists while she and Katherine Vaughan led with five rebounds.

Notes

  • The Judges stopped the Tartans' eight-game winning streak in the series.
