Tartans Close Season at Case Western Reserve

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team closed the season at Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, February 24 with a 63-52 loss. The Tartans finish the year with an overall record of 11-14 with a 3-11 mark in University Athletic Association (UAA) play while the Spartans finish at 11-14 and 4-10.

How It Happened

  • The Tartans led by as many as five points in the first quarter on three occasions before Case Western Reserve closed the period with a 10-2 run to lead by three, 18-15.
  • Carnegie Mellon tied the game at 18-all after sophomore Savannah Gibbs hit a free throw and junior Catherine Or scored on a fastbreak with a jump shot outside the paint.
  • The Spartans used an 11-point run over the next five minutes to take a double-digit lead which they grew to 22 points on a three-pointer by Mya Hartjes with 16 seconds to go in the half.
  • Senior Megan Matsko scored on a putback layup at the buzzer to have the Tartans trail, 44-24, at the break.
  • CWRU was 6-of-14 from three while the Tartans were 1-of-11 in the first half.
  • Neither team found a rhythm in the third period as both shot less than 30% from the floor.
  • Case Western Reserve took a 21-point lead into the final frame and despite pulling the game to single digits late, the Tartans couldn't overcome the deficit.

For the Tartans

  • Gibbs had seven of her 14 points in the final quarter and finished with her sixth double-double of the season with 12 rebounds.
  • Or tallied her seventh double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds and tied for the team lead with three assists.
  • Freshman Kayla Delmore finished her final game of her first season with nine points and three assists.

For the Spartans

  • Sarah Mitchell poured in 27 points to go with 12 rebounds while picking up five steals.
  • Kayla Characklis added 15 points.
