Tartans Defeat York 3-1 in Radisson Invitational

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team defeated York College of Pennsylvania 3-1 on Sunday, September 11, in its second game of the two-day Radisson Invitational at Carnegie Mellon. The Tartans even their record at 2-2 while the Spartans drop to 0-4 on the year.

Sophomore Brianna Magill (Oak Brook, Ill./Downers Grove North) gave the Tartans a one-goal lead in the sixth minute when she headed home a cross sent right inside the six-yard box by sophomore defensive back Brittany Couture (Santa Barbara, Calif.).

The score would remain 1-0 at the break in favor of the home team. The Tartans did have two other shots on goal, both by senior midfielder Elsa Wu (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and six corner kicks.

Wu did get one past York's keeper in the second half when she picked up a loose ball at the center of the 18-yard box and dribbled through a few defenders to place a shot to the right corner for the Tartans two-goal lead. The play accured following a corner kick by sophomore Alex Venegas (Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) that was headed back toward 18 and picked up by senior Kristen Suzich (Bethesda, Md./National Cathedral School). Wu then picked up the ball after numerous touches by both Carnegie Mellon and York players.

York was able to break through the Tartans defense when Lauren Ward dribbled down the left sideline. With just two defenders to beat, Ward centerd a pass to Jordan Snook who took a touch toward goal. Tartan sophomore keeper Anna Albi (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) cut the angle and saved the shot but the rebound found its way to Snook who was able to get off another shot that got by a Tartan defender guarding the net in the 78th minute.

Sophomore Rachel Contopoulos (Oakland, Calif./Berkeley) secured the win for the Tartans with 32 seconds to play when she riffled a shot to the upper corner. Freshman Savina Reid (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) touched off a pass about 20 yards deep and center to the goal that Contopoulos struck past the Spartan keeper.

The Tartans will next be in action on Thursday, September 15, when they travel to Frostburg State University for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
