Early Goal Drops Tartans Against #22 Case Western

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) – An early goal by Case Western Reserve University prevented the Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team from winning its third straight as the Spartans prevailed 2-0 on Sunday, October 16, in University Athletic Association (UAA) action. The Tartans are now 8-5 on the year and 2-2 in the league while the #22 Spartans improve to 10-2-2 and 3-1.

Case Western's Rachel Bourque put the home team ahead 1-0 in the seventh minute when whe fired a shot low from 25 yards out on a rainy afternoon. Devyn Lee earned the assist on the play.

The Tartans nearly answered a few minutes later when junior Brianna Magill (Oak Brook, Ill./Downers Grove North) had a shot saved by Anna Kennedy.

Carnegie Mellon kept the pressure on as senior Elsa Wu (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) had a shot blocked and two others saved by the 20:44 mark.

The score remained 1-0 at the break as sophomore keeper Anna Albi (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) stopped two Spartan shots in the 25th and 30th minutes.

The Tartans started the second half with two shots as Wu had one saved and freshman Savina Reid (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) put one wide.

Bourque struck again for the Spartans in the 56th minute when she lofted a shot over Albi's head after a cross in by Deena Levey.

Sophomore Alex Venegas (Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) hit the post with a shot in the 68th minute and later had one blocked that went out for a Tartan corner kick.

In the end, Kennedy was able to keep the shut out as she made a save against Reid and sophomore Cecilia Zischkau (Washington, D.C./Oakcrest) in the last five minutes.

The Tartans will next be in action at home on Friday, October 28, when they host New York University at 7:30 p.m.
