Tartans Top Denison 1-0

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team defeated Denison University 1-0 Wednesday, September 28, at home. The Tartans improve to 6-3 on the season as the Big Red drop to 4-4-2.

Junior Brianna Magill (Oak Brook, Ill./Downers Grove North) tallied her second goal of the season in the 23rd minute after she used two touches to place a shot to the opposite post for a 1-0 Tartans lead. Magill controlled a through ball from senior midfielder Elsa Wu (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial). The play started with a forward pass by sophomore defender Rachel Contopoulos (Oakland, Calif./Berkeley) to sophomore forward Alex Venegas (Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake). Venegas dumped off a pass to Wu who was facing goal and slotted a pass to Magill through the last two defenders.

A low driven ball by Lydia Harlan in the 42nd minute was smothered by sophomore keeper Anna Albi (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day), who preserved the one-goal lead at halftime with another save against Harlan a minute later when she lept to poke away an attempt to the far post.

The second half was evenly played as each team had two shots on goal with the majority of the play happening between the 18-yard boxes.

The Tartans will start University Athletic Association action on Sunday, October 2, at #12 Washington University. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. CT in St. Louis, Missouri.
