Tartans Dominate in 4-1 Win

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team won its second straight home match Tuesday night with a 4-1 victory over visiting Washington & Jefferson College. The Tartans improve to 3-0-2 on the year as the Presidents drop to 0-3.

The Tartans got on the board early when junior Rachel Contopoulos (Oakland, Calif./Berkeley) sent a corner kick to the far post in the second minute. After sophomore Savina Reid (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) flicked it on with her head there was a scramble in the box and the ball went off the defender and in the goal for an own goal by the Presidents.

Three minutes later, junior Brittany Couture (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) served the ball to the six-yard box and the Presidents' keeper was unable to secure it, as it went over her head and through her hands to bounce in the corner for Couture's first career goal and the Tartans' 2-0 lead.

The score remained 2-0 for the remainder of the half and for 16 minutes into the second half before the Tartans went ahead 3-0. Carnegie Mellon was awarded a corner kick in the 62nd minute that was taken by sophomore Lucy Havens (Seattle, Wash./Holy Names Academy). Once again, the ball bounced around the six-yard box and senior Katie Davis (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) charged in to fire it in the corner for her first goal of the season.

Washington & Jefferson put a point on the board in the 71st minute when Ariel Shasko scored off a free kick from the right side. Her shot sailed over the Tartan wall and beat Tartan keeper Anna Albi (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) to the upper 90.

The scoring closed in the 80th minute when sophomore Courtney Brant (Davie, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) one timed a corner kick by Havens for her first goal of the season.

The Tartans will play host to Kenyon College on Saturday, September 15 at 4:30 p.m. for their next contest.
