#21 Tartans Tie New York Despite Owning Possession and Opportunities

(NEW YORK, N.Y.) - Despite an offensively dominating game by the Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team, the Tartans played to a 0-0 draw on the road at New York University on Friday afternoon in University Athletic Association (UAA) play. The tie now puts the Tartans at 3-1-1 in the UAA and 10-1-3 overall while the Violets are 9-6-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the UAA.

The Tartans had the advantage in shots during the first period with five taken to the Violets two but all were off frame or blocked by the New York defense.

Carnegie Mellon continued to pressure the Violet defense as they earned five corner kicks in the first eight minutes of the second period. A header shot by senior defender Mitra Ebrahimi (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) in the 48th minute was wide while sophomore Savina Reid (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) hit the crossbar with a header in the 54th minute following a corner kick by junior Rachel Contopoulos (Oakland, Calif./Berkeley).

Junior keeper Anna Albi (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) made a save on a header by New York's Serra Tumay in the 56th minute before sophomore defender Lauren Simicich (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) had a shot blocked in the 59th minute.

The Tartans continued with threatening chances in overtime but were turned away by New York keeper Meg Patten. In the 92nd minute, junior Alex Venegas (Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School) made a back pass at the edge of the box to freshman Louisa Pendergast (Snohomish, Wash./Glacier Peak) but Patten made a diving play to fend off the chance.

In the 95th minute, senior Brianna Magill (Oak Brook, Ill./Downers Grove North) made a great move to get free on the endline and played a short pass to Venegas in front, but Patten was there to knock it away.

"We had a lot of good opportunities all game but just couldn't get the final touch," said head coach Yon Struble. "I'm very proud of our performance. We gave the right effort, moved the ball, won the ball in the air and got around them and through them. That one last touch just wasn't quite there."

The Tartans will continue their road trip as they face Brandeis University on Sunday, October 28 at 11:00 a.m.
