Tartans Battle Johns Hopkins in Home DoubleTree Tartan Cup

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – A battle of two nationally ranked top-ten teams was just that as No. 5 Carnegie Mellon University fell 3-2 to No. 7 Johns Hopkins University in the Carnegie Mellon Women's Soccer DoubleTree Tartan Cup on Sunday, September 8. The Tartans' record moves to 1-1-1 on the season while Hopkins improve to 5-0.

Carnegie Mellon got on the board first when junior Amanda So (Fairfax Station, Va./Lake Braddock Secondary) scored an unassisted goal in the 18th minute. So gained possession of the ball at the corner of the 18-yard box and dribbled left-to-right across the box, turned at the center and fired a right-footed shot high and center for her second goal of the season.

Two minutes later, senior defender Rachel Contopoulos (Oakland, Calif./Berkeley) kept the Tartans ahead when she saved a shot by Johns Hopkins' Kylie Fuller that was headed for the corner net.

The Tartans pressed forward with a pass down the sideline to junior Courtney Brant (Davie, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) in the 24th minute. Brant played a ball back to sophomore Carson Quiros (Atlanta, Ga./Whitefield Academy) who one-timed a pass forward where So flicked it on and over Blue Jay keeper Kelly Leddy who was caught on her line.

Hopkins took little time to cut the deficit in half when Hannah Kronick collected a free ball in box that spun back off a bounce on turf at 25:03. Kronick to a quick one-touch shot driven low past Tartan keeper Anna Albi (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day).

Five minutes later the Blue Jays equalized when Christina Convey ran down a ball causing Albi to leave her net and try to kick it clear. Timing was unlucky for the Tartans as Albi's sliding challenge met her own defender with the ball deflecting up and behind Albi toward the Tartan net. Convey jumped the play on the ground, and settled the ball off a high bounce for the easy shot to the open net.

Ten minutes into the second half, Hopkins earned a penalty kick on a tackle in the box by the Tartan defense. Sydney Teng was able to deposit the PK to the right corner past Albi for the 3-2 advantage.

The score would stay 3-2 for the remainder of the game as Hopkins held on for the victory.

The Tartans will next play on Wednesday, September 11 when they travel to Washington & Jefferson College for a match with the Presidents at 7:00 p.m.
