No. 16 Tartans Down La Roche in Non-Conference Action

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The No. 16 Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team recorded its third shutout in a row in defeating the La Roche College Redhawks 2-0 on Friday night. The Tartans improve to 5-1-1 as the Redhawks drop to 2-4.

The Tartans got on the board early when senior Rachel Contopoulos's (Oakland, Calif./Berkeley) scored directly off a corner kick. Her corner kick, taken in the 10th minute curved to the back post and through the hands of La Roche keeper Maria DiPerna.

In the 13th minute, freshman Megan Bartoshuk (Redwood City, Calif./Sequoia) drove across the box but her left-footed shot to the near post was saved by DiPerna.

The Tartans pressed for the remainder of the first period, landing three more shots on goal and just missing on a few other occasions. Both Bartoshuk and senior Cecilia Zischkau (Washington, D.C./Oakcrest) had close range shots blocked by the defense in the 23rd minute while a shot by junior Courtney Brant (Davie, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) was just wide.

DiPerna saved a penalty kick in the 30th minute to keep the score 1-0 in favor of the Tartans which is where it stood until sophomore Louisa Pendergast (Snohomish, Wash./Glacier Peak) scored her second goal of the season 11 minutes into the second half.

Sophomore Amanda Broderick (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) set the table for Pendergast who received a short pass in the center of the 18-yard box. Pendergast took one touch forward and first the shot low to the left corner for the two-goal Tartan lead.

Senior Anna Albi (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) earned the win playing the first 45 minutes while senior Julie Rekant (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) played the final 45 minutes to assist in the team shutout.

The Tartans will play home again on Wednesday, September 25 as they host Juniata College at 7:00 p.m.
