No. 15 Tartans Extend Winning Streak to Five

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The No. 15 Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team extended its winning streak to five with a 4-1 win over visiting Juniata College on Wednesday, September 25. The Tartans improve to 6-1-1 on the year while the Eagles fall for the first time and have a record of 7-1.

The Tartans opened the scoring early when sophomore Amanda Broderick (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) found the back of the net in the fourth minute. Junior Courtney Brant (Davie, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) played a ball from the corner to the center of the 18-yard box where freshman Anna Vonderhaar (Wheaton, Ill./St. Francis) continued it on to Broderick who fired a right footed shot across her body to the left corner.

Ten minutes later, junior Jordyn Greenberg (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) found a free ball at the center of the 18-yard box and drilled a uncontested shot to the left corner for her second goal of the year and the Tartans 2-0 lead.

Sophomore Louisa Pendergast (Snohomish, Wash./Glacier Peak) added to the Tartans' advantage with her third goal of the year with four minutes to play in the first half. The midfielder also picked up a free ball inside the 18-yard box and finished her shot to the left corner.

Juniata got on the board two minutes into the second period when leading goal scorer Paula Pryor beat Tartan freshman keeper Katie Liston (Lakewood, Ohio/Montessori HS at University Circle) whose sliding challenge was late at the edge of the 18-yard box. Pryor ran onto a pass from Rose Lucidi, who chipped the last defender with a pass into space, and calmly lofted a shot over Liston for her eighth score of the year.

Senior Rachel Contopoulos (Oakland, Calif./Berkeley) scored her second goal in as many games in the 70th minute after freshman Rebekah Walsh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) and sophomore Carson Quiros (Atlanta, Ga./Whitefield Academy) combined together before Quiros found Contopoulos for the one-time left footed strike to the far post.

Senior keeper Anna Albi (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) earned the win after playing the first 45 minutes. The win gives her four for the season and 29 for her career, tying the all-time wins mark for the program.

The Tartans will begin University Athletic Association play on Saturday, October 5 when the University of Chicago visits Pittsburgh for a 1:30 p.m. game.
