No. 17 Tartans Earn Shutout Overtime Win

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The No. 17 Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team pulled out an overtime win against Brandeis University, 1-0, in University Athletic Association (UAA) action Friday afternoon as the team wore pink jerseys in support of October's Breast Cancer Awareness month. Sophomore Louisa Pendergast (Snohomish, Wash./Glacier Peak) finished a penalty kick for the winning goal to move the Tartans to 7-2-2 on the year and 1-1-1 in UAA play.

Sophomore Allison McGugan (Chicago, Ill./Marist) was taken down in the box leading to the penalty kick by Pendergast. Junior Savina Reid (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) tossed a throw-in towards the box and McGugan's direction prior to the foul by a Brandeis defender.

The Tartans had the better of the opportunities in the first half with sophomore Carson Quiros (Atlanta, Ga./Whitefield Academy) having two shots saved, one by the Brandeis keeper and one by the team when she headed a corner kick toward the goal in the 43rd minute.

Both of Brandeis's first-half shots came in the first 15 minutes when Emma Eddy's free kick went off the crossbar in the 10th minute and Sapir Edalati's shot was saved by freshman keeper Katie Liston (Lakewood, Ohio/Montessori HS at University Circle) in the 15th minute.

Edalati had another shot saved by Liston in the 54th minute before Quiros put a shot on frame for the Tartans in the 55th minute.

Liston made her final save of the game in the 57th minute on a shot by Dara Spital and earned her third win of the year and first shutout.

The Tartans will play their final home game of the season on Sunday, October 20 when New York University visits Pittsburgh for a 1:30 p.m. kick.
